Following the huge success of our pilot in May, we are now scaling up to a year-long FREE programme. The Maths Masterclass Tutorials programme is delivered by TalentEd in partnership with best-selling author Dr. Simon Singh.

I am a teacher – what are the requirements of my school (e.g. payment)?
We do not require any payment from schools. We hope that teachers will be engaged and interested, but this is a programme that is primarily run direct with students and their parents/guardians. However, we will be contacting schools to nominate their students, and will also ask for schools to validate the credentials of applications.
I am a teacher – how many students can I nominate?
We are capping the number of nominations at six students per school. Where we receive nominations from more than one teacher in a school, we will accept the first six nominations received. This can be any split across Y8 and Y11. Please also remember that we are particularly keen to receive nominations for students who are Pupil Premium eligible, and where we receive more high quality applicants than we have places, preference will be given to these students.
If my student is accepted onto the Autumn Taster sessions, are they committed to the full year programme?
No. At the end of the Autumn Taster sessions in December we will invite students to continue to the full programme starting in January. We will only invite students who have been committed and engaged during the Taster to continue, and there is no obligation to continue.
How will you select students to take part?
We are looking for students who have the potential to become brilliant mathematicians. We will select students based on their maths potential (predicted grades, UK Maths Challenge medals, teacher recommendation). We will also give preference to students from less affluent backgrounds.
How do you define “less affluent background”?
We are passionate about providing this support to students who otherwise would not be able to access tuition. Therefore we will give priority to students who are or who have recently been eligible for Free School Meals (known as Pupil Premium eligible). We will also take into account the student’s postcode score on the Index of Multiple Deprivation database.
My child goes to a private/grammar school, or is home-schooled, can they take part?
No, this programme is only open to students who attend non-selective state schools.
My child is not in Year 8 or 11, but they would really benefit from the programme. Can I still apply?
You can still apply, but we are only forming tuition groups at year 8 and year 11 level. If there are exceptional circumstances, and places are available, we may accept students not in these year groups where their level would match one of the tutorial groups. However, please be aware that we make no guarantee of this. In future years we hope to expand to have more year groups in our intake, but in this our first year we are restricted in the scale we can operate at.
What are the technology requirements for taking part?
Students will need access to a computer with a stable internet connection for their weekly tutorial. Tablets can be used, and smartphones as a last resort. Sessions will be delivered via Zoom, and students will need to ensure video and audio functions work (support will be provided on how to access and trouble-shoot Zoom). If technology is likely to be an issue, accessing via a school computer room may be an option.
When will tutorial sessions take place?
The tutorials will take place after school hours during weekdays, or at weekends. If selected, students will be able to choose when they want to have their tutorial. Tutorials will then take place at the same time each week.
