David Walliams has joined a select group of authors to have sold more than £100 million worth of books.

The comedian turned children’s author joins the likes of JK Rowling, Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Julia Donaldson, Jamie Oliver and Dan Brown in reaching the landmark figure.

Walliams, 48, who first came to prominence in 2003 with his role in the comedy show Little Britain, has regularly topped the annual list of bestselling authors since his 2008 debut, The Boy in the Dress, which has sold almost one million copies.

The Royal Shakespeare Company has adapted the book into a show, with music from Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, and it opens in Stratford next week. The new production has been described by Gregory Doran, the artistic director, as a “life-affirming, funny story” and the company hopes it will replicate the success of its adaption of Roald Dahl’s Matilda.

Walliams’s literary success has made him a multimillionaire and his most popular book, Gangsta Granny, has sold 1.35 million paperback copies alone.
